Member Spotlight: Eric Snader

Eric joined Trail Roots in 2022 when COVID restrictions were lifted, and he couldn’t wait to get out of the house and be around people again. As a reliable member of the group, he works toward maintaining a consistent running routine to stay in shape and to build friendships. As a passion, Eric is also a stand-up comedian and enjoys making people laugh by performing at local comedy clubs. We wanted to ask him a few questions about his journey with running and Trail Roots.

What inspired you to start running?
I moved back to New Jersey, from the Bronx, NY, after finishing graduate school and needed something to do that would keep me active and connected with others. A friend of mine had run cross country in high school and suggested we go for a run. I enjoyed running and decided to enter some local 5Ks. I’ve been running ever since (28 years now).

Why did you join Trail Roots?

I had been a member of several Austin-based running groups since moving here in 2012. Each group served a purpose for training for races. I liked the idea of trying something new, such as trail running, and had been told that Trail Roots was a more chill and laid back running group. I attended a drop in Saturday run in Circle C and really enjoyed the people. And despite seeing a snake, I decided to join.

Has your training changed since joining a group?

My training has not changed in part because I have not trained for any races. I show up to the workouts with the goal of socializing while running.

What do you love about running?

I love running because I get to meet people from all different backgrounds. I also love running in different parts of the city, some of which I would never experience if I didn’t run with Trail Roots.

What do you think is special about Trail Roots?

I think Trail Roots is special because of the coaches. They all foster a fun, lowkey atmosphere where, no matter what your ability level, everyone seems to get along.

Are you training for anything right now? Do you have any goals for 2026?

I am not training for anything, and not sure I will train for anything in 2026. I simply want to make sure nobody has a reason to call me obese because of all the sweets I eat.

How did you get into stand up comedy?

I have been trying to make people laugh for as long as I can remember. My first unofficial gig was when I became an ordained minister (I am Jewish) online so that I could officiate a friend’s wedding (they have since divorced, so my success rate is 0%). In 2017 a coworker had had enough of hearing about my desire to do standup, and gave me a directive to sign up for an open mic. In April 2017, I did my first real set at an open mic at the old ColdTown Theater that was on Airport Blvd. Currently I perform on shows all around Austin, as well as other cities when I travel. Recently, I performed comedy to approximately 160 of my coworkers at our annual holiday luncheon. I think it went well since I’m still employed there.

What’s it like trying to make people laugh?

It feels amazing when I say or do something that makes people laugh. It’s truly a gift that is addictive.

What do you do for a living?

I have a doctorate in school-clinical child psychology, and currently work for a test publishing company, creating content for psychological, academic, and early childhood tests.

What advice would you give people who are new to running and want to join a group?

Just have fun! And be nice!
